Classic Three Little Pigs Books for Speech Therapy
It’s always important to make sure your students know the classic story versions of fairy tales, especially if you’re planning on incorporating twisted versions and comparing and contrasting! Following are some of my favorite more classic versions of Three Little Pigs:
- Walt Disney’s Three Little Pigs (A Little Golden Book)– This is one of my favorite versions of the classic tale, complete with a short video episode now on Disney+. In typical Disney fashion, it has quick little songs as well, that the kids love.
- The Three Little Pigs, Illustrated by Giuseppe Di Lernia- This is a larger board book, with thick pages, perfect for littles who are learning how to hold books, turn the pages, etc. It’s not easily destroyed and has precious illustrations.
- The Three Little Pigs, Retold by Kath Jewitt- Another nice sized book, this version is simple and classic, with nice illustrations.
The following freebie is available in my FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY. It’s great for practicing story retell, following directions, and increasing focus and engagement in therapy sessions! Twisted Versions of Three Little Pigs Books for Speech Therapy
If you’ve never heard of a Twisted Fairy Tale, let me introduce you to a fantastic concept for therapy! Twisted Fairy Tales are a new spin on a classic Fairy Tale, usually told by the original protagonist’s point of view. In the case of the Three Little Pigs, the twisted versions are usually told by the Wolf, who in one way or another, claims he is innocent and nice, and was either grossly misunderstood, or the pigs are really the rotten ones!
Twisted Fairy Tales are an incredible way to increase engagement, get some laughs, and introduce students to the concepts of different points of view, facts vs. opinions, and comparing and contrasting. I love using Twisted Fairy Tales throughout the year to address these concepts, and the students LOVE them! Following is a list of some of my favorite twisted versions of The Three Little Pigs:
- No Lie, Pigs (and Their Houses) Can Fly!, by Jessica Gunderson– This is a cute version where the wolf loses all of his hair! Disclosure: the first two pigs die instead of escaping, but according to the wolf, it’s not at his hands. In the end, the third pig and the wolf patch things up and become friends. You can find my book companion for this book HERE.
2. The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf, by Mark Teague– This funny and young-child-friendly version has a great happily-ever-after ending for the wolf and pigs. You can find my book companion for this book HERE.
3. The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs, by Jon Scieszka– This is a hilarious version (although disclaimer: the pigs die in this version, not just narrowly escape). There’s also a movie version free on Amazon Prime.
Other Similar Versions:
Another fun thing about The Three Little Pigs is that there are also other versions with either similar story lines or the same story line with different characters. I love incorporating these types of books too. They are excellent for comparing and contrasting!
- Corey Rosen Schwartz – The Three Little Ninja Pigs
- Ken Geist – The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark
- Liz Pichon – The Three Horrid Little Pigs
- Eugene Trivizas – The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
- Claire Evans – The Three Little Superpigs Once Upon a Time
- Claire Evans – The Three Little Superpigs
- Joseph Torcivia – The Three Little Hermit Crabs
- Margaret McNamara– The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot
- Helen Ketterman– The Three Little Gators
- Susan Lowell– The Three Little Javalinas
The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Shark is my son’s favorite, so I had to make a book companion for it! The companion features activities in color, black and white no-prep pages, and free access to the BOOM card version!
Plus, if you’re looking to incorporate articulation practice into this theme, this Feed the Shark Articulation BOOM card set goes great with the story!
