Halloween Activities for Speech Therapy

Are you looking for Halloween activities for speech therapy? I’ve put together a set of easy activities that are perfect for a Halloween theme! Amazon affiliate links are included throughout this post.

I love Halloween in this speech room! It’s the perfect time to get silly and really engage students while working on their goals! I’ve written several blog posts on Halloween activities for speech therapy, such as this one on Witch Activities and this one on making Ghost toast! I also wrote a post about incorporating music into speech with this Halloween Sing-a-Long, and a Feelings Post on how I teach character and feeling story elements during Halloween with jack-o-lanterns!

However, I know some schools don’t celebrate Halloween, so if this is you, I have some great alternatives for you! Check out my posts on Pumpkin Activities, nonfiction unit on Spiders, and (non-spooky) Monsters!

Halloween Books

There are so many amazing Halloween books that are excellent for speech therapy! I wrote a blog post HERE with many of my favorites! Below are some of the books and extension activities we use every year!

Room on the Broom is my favorite book to do for Halloween! I have three book companions available for Room on the Broom: A print colored companion with a few black and white pages, A Completely NO Prep companion, and a new Boom Card digital version.

Turkey Trick or Treat is also a fan favorite! You can find a printable colored companion HERE and a no prep companion HERE.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything is a favorite for all of my students! I just printed out and laminated photo props to use for story retell, but you can also use real clothing items!

Finally, I love using Happy Halloween Little Critter, Ten Timid Ghosts, the nonfiction book Spiders, There Was An Old Mummy Who Swallowed a Spider, and There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat. I have two freebies available for The Old Mummy and two freebies for the Old Lady & Bat as well! The printable “feed me” activities are available for my email subscribers HERE, and the digital Boom Card versions are available HERE and HERE.

Halloween Games:

What is Halloween without games? I love using inflatables for quick engaging reinforcement, and they’re super easy to deflate and store each year!

I have a Spider ring toss and a Witch hat ring toss, and my students love them both!

Finally, I made a Witch’s Brew game this year that my students are going crazy over! They’re asking for it every day!

Halloween Language Activities

I have so many students working on language goals! From idioms to comprehension, verbs, and more, there’s something here for everyone!

If you want to incorporate nonfiction into your therapy lessons, teaching your students the history behind holidays we celebrate is a great way to do it! I use my History of Halloween comprehension packet to teach my older students where the traditions come from! This packet also includes vocabulary cards and Bingo boards for younger students!

To target language skills, I have a Halloween Language Bundle that has all kinds of Halloween-themed language activities, including:
Story Starters
Synonyms
Antonyms
WH Questions
Pumpkin Patch Pronouns
Halloween Costume Inferences
Halloween Safety True/False
And Halloween-themed Idioms

There is also a Boom Card version of the Halloween-themed Idioms!

If you don’t have a lot of time to prep therapy materials, I also use the Halloween No Prep Speech and Language unit to target so many goals! It’s over 100 pages, and truly has something for everyone!

Following directions is so much for engaging with cute Halloween clipart and Boom Cards! This Halloween Following Directions Boom Card set is so fun, and also has sound so they can practice independently even if they aren’t reading yet!

Finally, if you have students working on verbs, grammar, or expanding sentences, this Halloween Verb Freebie is perfect!

Halloween Classroom Decor

What’s Halloween without decor?!?! You can decorate your room really quickly for about $2! Just get some packs of spider webs and start pulling and draping them over everything. It will only take you about 10 minutes, and your students will love it!!

You can also use props from Halloween to make lessons more engaging! I snagged these skeleton arms from the Dollar Tree for $1 for a pack of two! My students are LOVING using them to point out vocabulary words, find their sounds in books, follow along with the story, and so much more! And they go perfectly with a Skeleton book, like The Bones of Fred McGee!

Halloween Crafts

When it comes to crafts, I need something easy to prep and quick to complete so we have plenty of time to target goals as well. Here’s a few of my favorites:

This witch craft writing freebie is great for older students who still like to get crafty! It’s available in my free resource library HERE.

This q-tip skeleton is very easy to do as well. I just cut a skeleton head out of a dish sponge, and I can use it every year! Stamp it on black construction paper with white paint and glue the q-tips on as the bones!

After Halloween is Over:

I don’t know about you, but we always have tons of candy left over after Halloween. I obviously can’t eat it all, and it’s a shame to let it go to waste! So I made a quick freebie for educational activities to do with leftover Halloween candy. You can find it in my free resource library HERE.

What an incredible honor to present at an ASHA Convention again, this time in DC, in what is the Centennial year of ASHA and coming up on the 250th anniversary of the USA! 🇺🇸

We spent the week touring DC as a family and teaching the kids all about our US History, trying new foods, and enjoying the cool fall weather and colorful leaves that we aren’t accustomed to.

My heart is full of gratitude as we start our long drive home tomorrow to get ready for Thanksgiving!
