By the time the groundhog theme rolls around in our speech room each year, I’m over Winter and beyond ready for Spring! With the crazy South GA weather, we don’t ever know if we need a jacket, shorts, or both from day to day anyway. In addition to promoting literacy, books are perfect for working on articulation, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, grammar, MLU, and every other student goal using just a single book!
- Groundhog Gets A Say, by Pamela Swallow. There is so much more to a groundhog than predicting the weather. In this adorable book, your students will learn all kinds of factual information about groundhogs and their many talents!
- Go to Sleep Groundhog, by Judy Cox. Such a cute holiday book about a Groundhog who can’t sleep, and the many new sights and wonders he discovers while he’s exploring instead of sleeping!
- The Night Before Groundhog Day, by Natasha Wing. I love the adorable “night before” books by Natasha Wing. Students will learn the traditions behind Groundhog Day while looking at adorable brightly colored pictures!
- Groundhog’s Runaway Shadow, by David Biedrzycki. This is such an adorable book about a groundhog and his shadow and the power of friendship!
- Substitute Groundhog, by Pat Miller. Uh oh! Groundhog is too sick to perform his job this year, so he sets out to find a replacement. Can any other animal do the job?
- Punxsutawney Phyllis, by Susanna Hill. Move over, Phil! There’s a new girl in town! I love this book for teaching that it’s okay to be different, even when you’re a groundhog!
- Groundhog’s Dilemma, by Kristen Remenar. Groundhog finds himself in a pickle when he allows himself to be swayed by his friends’ wishes. He learns a valuable lesson about honesty and truthfulness is this adorable story!
- Groundhog’s Day Off, by Robb Pearlman.
Groundhog has had enough, and sets out to find a new animal to fulfill his Groundhog Day duties. But is there anyone better for the job? - Groundhog Day, by Gail Gibbons. Gail Gibbons is the master of nonfiction for children! She dives into ancient holidays and traditions that teach students how our current Groundhog Day traditions came to pass!
- Groundhog’s Weather School, by Joan Holub. I love the nonfiction in this book! It teaches about weather and season change, as well as how Groundhog Day came to be!
