I don’t usually have a lot of time to touch on Groundhog Day, but I try to devote at least one therapy session per group to the holiday each year. Why? Because my students need the background knowledge and holiday vocabulary. Plus, I really enjoy teaching about the nonfictional aspects of the history behind holidays!
The History of Groundhog Day
To some, Groundhog Day might be a lost holiday. I guess if you live in Pennsylvania, it’s probably still a pretty big deal. But in South GA, we don’t have any groundhogs. And that’s exactly why I feel like it’s important to teach! Many of my students are severely lacking in background knowledge and vocabulary. So holidays are a natural way to incorporate relevant vocabulary in an organic (and fun) way!
Most of the time when I am teaching about holidays, I take the nonfiction approach. Sure, I still throw in the fictional aspects and vocabulary, but I want my students to have an understanding of where the holidays and traditions came from. This is also a great way to incorporate cultural understanding and diversity!
With my History of Groundhog Day packet, students can learn vocabulary and strengthen comprehension while learning about why we celebrate Groundhog Day and where the traditions come from!
