Halloween is over, and if you’re like me, you need to get the candy out of your house FAST! Hopefully these activities for leftover Halloween candy will help. I’ve been sending a freebie home to parents for Leftover Halloween Candy Activities. They’re loving the ideas for targeting speech, language, and academic skills with manipulatives they already have at home!
Speech Activities for Leftover Halloween Candy
I don’t know about you, but I’ll do anything to engage my students while practicing their speech sounds. Candy is a REALLY good motivator, too! If you aren’t able to use treats at your school, you can always send it home with the student to eat later!
When using Halloween candy with my speech articulation groups, we search for candy in the pile that has their target sound. If they’re working at the sentence level, they practice requesting the candy in sentences. For my older students, we’ve also played a game where I give them a piece of paper and a pencil and have them make a list of all the candy they can think of with their target sound!
Language Activities for Leftover Halloween Candy
Language skills are easy to target with huge pile of Halloween candy! You can work on describing, categorizing, comparing and contrasting, and plurals. You can also target vocabulary, following directions, comparisons (bigger/biggest, best/worst, hardest/chewiest), pretend play, and so much more! These activity pages in the Free Leftover Halloween Candy Activities packet make a quick language lesson easy!
Social Skills Activities for Leftover Halloween Candy
You can practice social skills with Halloween candy as well! Have your students set up a pretend candy shop. This can be really simple! Put one of each of the different types of candy on the table. Then have someone serve as the server and someone as the customer.
Have your students practice requesting by communicating (in complete sentences) which type of candy they wish to have. You can set up certain scenarios depending on what your students are working on. For instance, if they’re working on sharing, problem solving, or handling situations without meltdowns, set up a scenario where they aren’t able to have their first choice. Even if they end up getting what they’d like in the end, it’s still a great opportunity to practice reactions. Take this opportunity to talk about what their favorite candy types are, and how different people have different opinions. These writing pages in the Free Leftover Halloween Candy Activities download are perfect for sharing about their favorite candy and why!
You can also practice other social skills like sharing, giving compliments, taking turns, having a good attitude, topic maintenance, etc. Use the candy as motivators for them to “earn” when they give correct answers (if handing out consumables at your school/work place is allowed!)
Target Academic Activities, Too!
Academics like math and spelling are way more fun when candy is involved, right?!?! I use a big pile of Halloween candy to target spelling, counting, tallying, graphing, and more!
