Do you ever do a Cinco de Mayo theme in therapy? I LOVE teaching my students about the history behind holidays. It’s a great way to teach history, comprehension, and vocabulary. In addition, it’s also a fantastic way to teach them about how certain holiday traditions were formed, different cultures and religions. This gives them a broader world view and appreciation for other cultures and traditions that might differ than their own. Cinco de Mayo is highly celebrated in our small town in a variety of ways. I compiled a list of my favorite Cinco de Mayo books for speech therapy below. I included affiliate links, but you can find many of these as read-alouds online. Cinco de Mayo Books for Speech Therapy
- Cinco de Mayo, by Emma Carlson Berne- This is a great story of the history behind Cinco de Mayo, and it has music included!
- Celebrating Cinco de Mayo: Fiesta Time! by Sandi Hill– This is a short story, and it’s perfect for younger students!
- Marco’s Cinco de Mayo, by Lisa Bullard-This is an adorable story of Marco, and it includes lots of Cinco de Mayo vocabulary!
- Cinco de Mayo, by Mary Dodson Wade– This book includes factual information behind the holiday!
- Chicks and Salsa, by Aaron Reynolds– This one is a super cute book about farm animals cooking Mexican foods!
- Dragons Love Tacos, by Adam Rubin– I love this funny book about how much dragons love tacos. However, they hate spicy food!
- Dragons Love Tacos 2, by Adam Rubin– This is a sequel to the first book, and my students love this one, too!
