Three Little Pigs Activities for Speech Therapy

Are you looking for Three Little Pigs Activities for Speech Therapy? I’ve put together a set of easy activities that are perfect for a Three Little Pigs or Fairy Tale theme! Amazon affiliate links are included throughout this post.

I love using fairy tales in the speech room throughout the year! They are a wonderful way to teach story grammar elements and work on concepts such as character progression, different perspectives, comparing and contrasting, conflict resolution, and cause and effect.

Three Little Pigs Books for Speech Therapy

Below, I listed my favorite books for a Three Little Pigs theme. But, if you want to see how I use these books in therapy, check out this blog post HERE. The following list includes classic versions, twisted versions, and books similar to The Three Little Pigs, but with different characters.

  1. Walt Disney’s Three Little Pigs (A Little Golden Book)
  2. The Three Little Pigs, Illustrated by Giuseppe Di Lernia
  3. The Three Little Pigs, Retold by Kath Jewitt
  4. No Lie, Pigs (and Their Houses) Can Fly!, by Jessica Gunderson
  5. The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf, by Mark Teague
  6. The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs, by Jon Scieszka
  7. Corey Rosen Schwartz – The Three Little Ninja Pigs
  8. Ken Geist – The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark
  9. Liz Pichon – The Three Horrid Little Pigs
  10. Eugene Trivizas – The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
  11. Claire Evans – The Three Little Superpigs Once Upon a Time
  12. Claire Evans – The Three Little Superpigs
  13. Joseph Torcivia – The Three Little Hermit Crabs
  14. Margaret McNamara– The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot
  15. Helen Ketterman– The Three Little Gators
  16. Susan Lowell– The Three Little Javalinas

Three Little Pigs Dramatic Play

I LOVE incorporating dramatic play into speech therapy. One of the questions I get asked the most during my seminars on dramatic play is if I use it with older (upper elementary) students, and my answer is HECK YEAH! My fourth and fifth graders LOVE dramatic play, and many of my colleagues use my dramatic play sets with their middle school students as well! Kids have such limited opportunities for creative free play these days, especially in school. SLPs have a unique opportunity to target pretty much every goal imaginable with dramatic play, and the kids don’t even know they’re working! One of my favorite ways to target story retell is through dramatic play, simply by having the students act out the story! You can use costumes, make your own props, or just use the students without anything extra!

My son LOVES wolves. Therefore, by default, he loves The Three Little Pigs. For his 2nd birthday, we had a Three Little Pigs Theme. It was such a fun time, and I’ve been able to use a few of the party favors we had as manipulatives in therapy ever since. The wolf and pig ears are a perfect way to incorporate simple costumes without the spread of too many germs….plus, they’re inexpensive enough that you could have multiple sets. They’re from an Etsy shop HERE. The plastic wolf and pig animals we used for his cake toppers are linked HERE. I now use them with blocks for a great additional dramatic play center option! The Three Little Pig Finger Puppets can be found HERE. If you wanna do a little simple decorating, use straw bales, bricks (real or these pretend ones), and sticks from the yard for a quick and easy centerpiece!

Three Little Pigs Language Activities

I love using the above books to teach about The Three Little Pigs to target story elements, comprehension, sequencing, fiction vs. nonfiction, opinion vs fact, comparing and contrasting, describing, vocabulary, and more! I especially love using Twisted Fairy Tales to compare and contrast with the original versions and target differing perspectives.

Use the cutouts from the book companions and use sticky magnetic strip tape or popsicle sticks on the backs. Then the students can retell the story with the different pieces. They love it!

Find the book companion for The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf HERE. You can find the book companion for No Lie, Pigs and Their Houses Can Fly HERE.

The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark

If you’re looking for a new book that has a similar story to The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark is a new favorite! Find the new book companion for it HERE.

In addition, I have an exclusive freebie that goes great with The Three Little Pigs! Readers on my email list have access to a Free Resource Library with tons of freebies you can find anywhere else! Not on the list? Click HERE to hop on so you can snag this freebie and and lots of other great freebies, too!

Articulation Activity

Did you know that you can carry over themes into speech articulation too? These Feed the Shark Boom Cards are so fun…..and perfect for practicing or progress monitoring initial sounds in words!

Three Little Pigs STEAM Activity

Do you ever incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities into therapy sessions? They are an INSTANT way to get students engaged and working together for problem solving, critical thinking, and more! I came up with a quick STEAM activity for the Three Little Pigs that my older students LOVED!

Which material can make a stronger structure? Does HOW you construct it make some materials stronger than others? We used uncooked spaghetti noodles for the straw, pretzel sticks for the sticks, and Hershey kiss blocks for the bricks. Also, we used mini marshmallows and gumdrops to hold the materials together. But you could also use peanut butter, marshmallow spread, or other sticky items to try that, too!

After building their “houses,” the students tried to “blow them down” to see which structures stayed up the best! It was such a fun and engaging lesson! Plus, I did let them eat the extra pieces, not the ones that had been handled! 😉

Three Little Pigs Craft

Crafts are so fun and engaging, but they still need to be quick, low-prep, and most importantly, functional! This quick pig craft checks all of those boxes!! If I’m doing a craft, I like to have the pieces pre-prepped. This helps with time, and ensures we get to finish the craft while also targeting our goals.

Three Little Pigs Games and Manipulatives

I LOVE getting to incorporate themed games into my lessons, as they increase engagement and bring the theme to life! Plus, manipulatives, like the finger puppets shown here, are also a fun way to incorporate story retell and movement activities with your younger students! You can find the Three Little Pigs game HERE and the finger puppets HERE.
