Turkey Activities for Speech Therapy

Are you looking for turkey activities for speech therapy? Not everyone does holiday activities at school, so I’ve put together a set of easy turkey activities that are perfect for a fun, but non-holiday specific theme! Amazon affiliate links are included throughout this post.

Turkey Books

Until I started looking, I had no idea all of the amazing books out there about turkeys! Some of them I “borrowed” from my kids’ book collection at home, some I checked out from the school library, and others I’ve collected from Amazon or Scholastic over the years. Here’s my favorite list:

  1. How to Catch a Turkey, by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton
  2. Amelia Bedelia Talks Turkey, by Herman Parish
  3. Run, Turkey, Run, by Diane Mayr
  4. The Amazing Turkey Race, by Steve Metzger
  5. T is for Turkey, by Tanya Lee Stone
  6. 10 Turkeys in the Road, by Brenda Reeves Sturgis
  7. 10 Fat Turkeys, by Tony Johnston
  8. Turkeys, by Wendy Strobel Dieker
  9. There Was Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey, by Lucille Colandro
  10. Turkey Trouble, by Wendi Silvano

Turkey Trouble is one of my favorite books to teach all year! In fact, there are three other Turkey books that you can use throughout the year for different holidays! I have three different activity companions for Turkey Trouble making it easy to incorporate Turkey Trouble with all of your groups and students!

1. Turkey Trouble Book Companion (Included activities in color to print and laminate, as well as a few black and white worksheets):
2. Turkey Trouble No Prep Book Companion (Includes ONLY black and white pages to print or send home with students)
3. Turkey Trouble Boom Card Companion (Boom Card deck with activities such as comprehension questions, sequencing, basic concepts, vocabulary, category sorting, and much more! Great for face-to-face or teletherapy!

You guys know I love incorporating nonfiction into therapy! I recently found the new Animals on the Farm: Turkeys book, and I love that there isn’t a lot of text on each page, so it’s perfect for my younger students and non-readers! Here’s a mini companion that can be used with or without this book. It includes activities such as comprehension questions, true/false, vocabulary, the turkey life cycle, turkey labeling, and more! You can find it HERE.

Finally, all of my students love the Old Lady books, and There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey is no exception! I have two freebies for this book, too!

Here’s a Boom Card Reinforcement Freebie:

And here’s a printable freebie with a color activity and a black/white sequencing worksheet available in my Free Resource Library. If you’re already on my email list, just enter the password to download this and many other exclusive freebies. If you’re not already on the list, enter your email to be added, and you’ll be emailed the password!

Turkey Articulation Activities

One of the most common questions I get is how I use literacy with my students working on articulation. I get it: You love the books and you want to use them in therapy, but you aren’t sure how to use the books and still target speech sounds. I made this Feed the Turkey (pizza) Boom Card Activity to target initial sounds. It goes perfectly with the book Turkey Trouble, but it can be used separately from it as well. All of the initial sounds are included, including /ch, sh, th, s-blends, l-blends, and r-blends/.

Turkey Crafts

Making turkeys is such an easy craft! I took a little different approach with this one, though. I found this at the target dollar spot a few years back, but you could print one out you find online. Use construction paper for the feathers! But instead of writing directly on the paper, I laminated the turkey body and the feathers and cut them out individually. I let my students use dry erase markers to write something they were thankful for, and then we put them altogether. Then, we discuss as a group the different things everyone is thankful for. Erase and repeat for the next group! Working with articulation goals? Use the feathers to write down target words or sentences!

Turkey Games

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to practice social scenarios and conversational skills! You can use these Turkey Topic Conversation cards to practice both! They include pie plates and pieces of pumpkin pie, so your students can “earn” pieces of pie for correct responses. You can decide before the game how many pieces of pie make a whole pie, and whoever makes a whole pie first, wins!

Working on following directions? Or looking to incorporate movement into therapy sessions? You can use these Turkey Tom Says cards to do both while having so much fun! (Play like Simon Says).

This past week/weekend was one for the books! 4 Cinderella performances in 3 days, balloon arch building, lots of printing for the show, spirit week, running soccer games on Saturday, final production and breakdown on Saturday night, children’s choir singing on Sunday at church, followed by building a bike, a baby shower, and a ballerina’s birthday. Thankful for family and friends who jump in to help and show up to support our kids…and friends/neighbors who know your kids are probably eating cereal again and show up with breakfast feasts instead. We’re in the thick of busy season, but thankful for every memory with my crew! ... See MoreSee Less
