Monster Activities for Speech Therapy

Are you looking for monster activities for speech therapy? Not everyone celebrates Halloween, so I’ve put together a set of easy monster activities that are perfect for a fun, but non-scary theme! Amazon affiliate links are included throughout this post.

Monster Books

Until I started looking, I had no idea all of the amazing books out there about monsters! Some of them I “borrowed” from my kids’ book collection at home, some I checked out from the school library, and others I’ve collected from Amazon or Scholastic over the years. But they’re all so fun and not at all scary! Here’s my favorite list:

Monsters Love Underpants, by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort
How to Catch a Monster, by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton
My Monster Mommy Loves Me So, bu Laura Leuck
Goodnight Little Monsters, by Kara Lareau
The Monster at the End of the Book, by Jon Stone
Go Away Big Green Monster, by Ed Emberley
Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak
The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson
Love Monster, by Rachel Bright}
There’s a Monster Under by Bed, by James Howe

If you’ve never heard of The Gruffalo, it’s quickly become a new favorite! It’s written by Julia Donaldson (the same author as our beloved Room on the Broom), and it’s perfect for year-round fun! The best news??? It also has a precious movie to go with it! I love using the movies based off of Julia Donaldson’s books to compare and contrast the books and the movies. I made a quick compare and contrast freebie for my email subscribers to use HERE!

Monster Language Activities

I made a new Boom Card set for Monster Following Directions! Practice basic concepts, spatial concepts, and more! Sound is included for your non-readers! You can find it HERE.

Here are some other fun monster activities for language skills:

Build a Monster Boom Cards for Speech Therapy, by Fun In Speech
Monster Push-In Lessons by The Dabbling Speechie
Feed the Monster Activities for Mixed Groups by Ms. Gardenia
Monster Pragmatics Trivia by Live Love Speech
Monster Questions by Sublime Speech
The Love Monster Book Companion by The Speech Bubble SLP
Social Skills Monsters by Crazy Speech World

Monster Articulation Activities

Sometimes tackling articulation sounds can be a monster! But not with these low to no-prep Monster Articulation Activities! Crazy Speech World has several monster articulation activities perfect for any sounds!

Articulation Monster Boom Cards Bundle by Crazy Speech World
No Print Articulation Monsters Bundle by Crazy Speech World
The Love Monster No Prep Articulation by Crazy Speech World

Monster Crafts

When I’m choosing a craft, I need it to be quick, low-prep, and functional! This Monster Writing Craftivity meets all of the criteria! It’s FREE for my email subscribers HERE. Not on my email list? Fill in your information and you’ll be emailed the password for all of the exclusive freebies!

If you want something simple that your students can do each year, try making playdough monsters! Just give your students playdough and some “decorations,” and watch their creativity come to life! Then, have them describe their monsters to the group! Or for even more fun, give them a description of a monster, and have them create it with their materials! For the decorations, I used googly eyes and pipe cleaners that I snipped to different lengths. You can also use candy corn (they make great teeth!), and really anything you have laying around!

These Monster Speech Bracelets from Fun In Speech are so cute, functional, and FREE, and if you’re working on following directions, these Love Monster Directed Drawings from Creative Clips are so cute….and Free as well!

Monster Games

These monster games are sure to have your students “roaring” with laughter!

Using inflatables in speech has become one of my favorite reinforcers. Not only do the kids love them, but they are a great way to incorporate movement and increase engagement. Plus, they store so much easier than a large board game! This monster inflatable from Oriental Trading company is so much fun and easily adaptable for lots of different games and activities. You can pair it with a ball to toss in the hole, “feed” the monster articulation or vocabulary cards, and so much more! Plus, you can pull him out again during Valentine’s Day!

Have your students ever played “Feed the Woozle?” It’s such a fun game for kids of all ages, and is great for promoting dexterity, balance, gross motor skills, counting, language development, and more! Click HERE for the affiliate link to see the game.

These Monster Match cards from Minds That Play are so cute! There are two different ways to play: simple matching (match the monster halves), or through describing the monsters you have in your hand…perfect for working on describing, expanding utterances, and more!

Finally, if you’re not familiar with the Toca Boca apps, they’re instantly favorites for my students! This Toca Kitchen Monsters app is free, and such a fun reinforcer! The students can “feed” the monster different foods. If he likes them, he’ll smack his lips as he gobbles them up. If he doesn’t like them, you’ll know it quickly with a funny surprise!

Monster Classroom Decor

Monster classroom decor can be super simple! I LOVE how one of our kindergarten classrooms made this super simple monster door and hallway decor!

We spent the week touring DC as a family and teaching the kids all about our US History, trying new foods, and enjoying the cool fall weather and colorful leaves that we aren’t accustomed to.

My heart is full of gratitude as we start our long drive home tomorrow to get ready for Thanksgiving!
