Apple Activities for Speech Therapy

Are you looking for apple activities for speech therapy? I’ve put together a set of easy activities that are perfect for an apple theme! Affiliate links are included.

Apple Books

If you’ve been around for long, you already know about my love for books. I use them in nearly every therapy session to target just about every goal on my caseload. Language + Literacy just makes my heart skip a beat every single time.

Three of my favorite books for an Apple theme are:
1. Apple Trouble, by Scamell
2. The Biggest Apple Ever, by Steven Kroll
3. Apples, by Gail Gibbons

I whipped up a book companion for Apples, by Gail Gibbons. It includes everything from comprehension questions, writing activities, comparing and contrasting, vocabulary, prepositions, simple opposites, apple labeling, the apple life cycle, and so much more!

Apple Language Activities:

It seems I have quite a bit of students this year working on idioms and figurative language. We’ve used this Apple Idioms game board to practice idioms we’ve already learned, as well as go over some new ones! You can use these apples for game pieces, apple mini erasers, or even coins!

We’ve also used these apple ‘wh’ questions. They also come with an open-ended game board and penalty cards.

Apple Games:

We’ve had so much fun playing these apple-themed games as reinforcement or to work on new vocabulary words. The Apples to Apples Junior game has always been a favorite, but I’m especially enjoying the Apples to Apples Dice game since COVID-19 has made it more important than ever to keep things sanitized. Finally, Scrabble Apple has also been a crowd favorite! We’ve spelled words with our articulation sounds and site words!

Apple Digital Activities:

In the days of mixing teletherapy with face-to-face, digital activities have gained lots of popularity! We’ve watched some awesome educational videos on apples, even taking a virtual field trip to an apple orchard! The links to these are included in my Apples Book Companion.

Have you jumped on the Boom Card train yet? While I was hesitant to add something else to learn to my list, I’ve got to admit: they’ve been a life saver for teletherapy! Even my students at school are loving them! We don’t use them the entire session, but they’ve been perfect for quick progress monitoring or reinforcement. I made a quick Apple Pickin’ reinforcement deck that’s open ended, so it can be used for many different goals! Once your student completes their trial, they can “pick” an apple off the apple tree and put it in their basket. There are enough apples on the tree for 60 trials!

Apple Tastings & Attributes:

One of my favorite apple activities for speech therapy is doing an apple tasting activity. Not only do the students love it, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to incorporate adjectives and attributes while working on describing! The past few years, I’ve used the One Therapy Item: Apples packet from Nicole Allison. She has a great worksheet for the students to log the information from their taste test! It also includes adjective cards and many other things!

I also ordered these adorable Attribute Apples this year, and it was the best purchase! My students have loved using them for comparing and contrasting, describing, and comparatives. I made some free apple adjective cards to go along with them. They’re available in the FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY.

Apple Picking:

I love incorporating movement into my speech activities. Anything to keep my students engaged! In the past few years, I’ve done a farm theme with a Speech Orchard. I used the apples from the Speech Orchard during the apple week as well! The apples are laminated, and I use dry erase markers to write target words or sounds on them. This can also work for language goals like category members, pronouns, or pretty much anything! Each student has a apple basket (bins from the dollar tree), and as they say their targets, they “pick” their apples from the tree. Don’t have time to make trees from bulletin board paper? Just draw them on your dry erase board!

Apple Freebies:

Who doesn’t love (and need) freebies? Here are a few free recommendations for apple activities for speech therapy:

I made a free Apple Freebie just for my email subscribers. You can find it in the free resource library. If you haven’t already joined my email list, you can do so HERE to get the password for all of the exclusive freebies not available in my TpT store! The freebie includes apple adjectives, apple labeling, an apple life cycle page, and a no-prep comprehension question page for the book Apples, by Gail Gibbons.

Don’t forget about my Boom Cards Apple Pickin Reinforcement freebie!

Also, Ashley Rossi has a great Apple 50 trials companion both in print form and in a Boom Card version!

Other Apple Recommendations:

Need a few more apple activities for speech therapy? Here are a few more favorites by other amazing SLP authors:

Green Screen Speech Activities: Apples, by Ashley Rossi

Interactive Vocabulary Books: Apples, by Jenna Rayburn Kirk

Cooking Activities (Apple Pie in a Cup, for instance!), by Kristine Lamb

Autumn No Prep Speech & Language Activities, by Felice Clark (the apple categories pages are my favorite!)

I hope this helps you with your planning for apple activities for speech therapy! It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite themes!

This past week/weekend was one for the books! 4 Cinderella performances in 3 days, balloon arch building, lots of printing for the show, spirit week, running soccer games on Saturday, final production and breakdown on Saturday night, children’s choir singing on Sunday at church, followed by building a bike, a baby shower, and a ballerina’s birthday. Thankful for family and friends who jump in to help and show up to support our kids…and friends/neighbors who know your kids are probably eating cereal again and show up with breakfast feasts instead. We’re in the thick of busy season, but thankful for every memory with my crew! ... See MoreSee Less
