Farm Books for Speech Therapy

My favorite theme to do all year is the Farm. I grew up on an Angus cattle farm, and farming is pretty much life in my small town in South GA. A farm theme is engaging and fun for all of my students! You can see a post for my favorite farm-themed therapy activities HERE! Below, I put together a list for my favorite Farm Books for Speech Therapy! Amazon affiliate links are included.

Farm Books for Speech Therapy:

Three Hens and a Peacock, by Lester Laminack:

I absolutely love this story! It teaches such a great lesson about loving yourself, the importance of being unique, and how everyone has different strengths. You can find my book companion for it HERE.

Mr. Duck Means Business, by Tammi Sauer:

This is the perfect book for teaching social skills, making friends, and compromise! You can find my book companion HERE.

Cock-a-doodle WHO? by Melanie Joyce:

Seriously, this is the cutest farm-themed book about a bossy, loud Rooster. The farm animals have to come together to think of a plan to put him in his place! Plus, it has darling pictures, great vocabulary, and delightful rhyming!

Charlie the Ranch Dog, by Ree Drummond:

This is the sweetest story by the Pioneer Woman about her beloved family dog. In addition, it has the most precious pictures, which allow for great discussion on making inferences!

Funny Farm, by Mark Teague:

This book is perfect for sequencing, comprehension questions, and making inferences from the pictures!

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Cow, by Lucille Colandro:

My favorite “Old Lady” book ever! The Old Lady is back at eating all kinds of inedible items, but this time she’s on the farm. In the end, after she has rid herself of all the things she previously swallowed, it culminates in a farm-animal square dance! I love showing my students what a square dance is from Youtube videos after we read this story!

The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash, by Trinka Hakes Noble:

Such a fun book for Spring, especially if you’re going on a field trip! You can find my book companions HERE and HERE. (prep and no prep companions available).

Farm, by Penelope Arlon and Tory Gordon-Harris:

I love this Scholastic book that is filled with factual information about farming and details the many different types of farms, including alligator farms and chocolate farms! My students really enjoy learning about the other types of farms that aren’t the norm!

How to Speak Moo, by Deborah Fajerman:

This is one of my favorite books ever! (Ok, I know I say that a lot, but for real, I love this one.) It discusses how cows talk in “moos,” but each “moo” is different and means different things. It’s great for working on basic concepts, opposites, adverbs, and descriptive words!

Secrets of the Vegetable Garden, by Carron Brown & Giordano Poloni:

Beautifully illustrated, this Shine-A-Light book is great for discussing vegetable garden farms, as well as the different types of veggies. The students love holding the pages up to a flashlight to see hidden pictures on the pages!

The Cow Said Neigh, by Rory Feek:

The newest addition to my farm-themed books, this one is a new favorite! It tells the tale of farm animals who all wish they were like the other animals….until they realize that they were created exactly how they are supposed to be!

The Jolly Barnyard, by Annie Bedford:

This was my favorite Little Golden Book as a child, and it’s still a favorite both in my speech room and at home! Filled with adorable pictures and a precious story, it is always one of my “go-to’s” during farm week!

The Cow Loves Cookies, by Karma Wilson:

Who doesn’t love Cookies?!?! The cows in this book sure do! It’s written by Karma Wilson, the same author who penned the “Bear” books I so love, and the story is just as fun! We use this book to wrap up farm week, and I usually bring along some cookies to share while we’re reading it!

Little Blue Truck, by Alice Schertle:

Blue, a little pick up truck, gets stuck in the muck. Thankfully, his new farm animal friends are determined to help! With truck and animal sounds, this one is most definitely a favorite for all the little boys out there, and the girls too!

Pig’s Egg, by Katherine Sully:

Such a fun book for both Spring and farm themes, as well as life cycles! You can find my book companions HERE and HERE. (prep and no prep companions available).

What an incredible honor to present at an ASHA Convention again, this time in DC, in what is the Centennial year of ASHA and coming up on the 250th anniversary of the USA! 🇺🇸

We spent the week touring DC as a family and teaching the kids all about our US History, trying new foods, and enjoying the cool fall weather and colorful leaves that we aren’t accustomed to.

My heart is full of gratitude as we start our long drive home tomorrow to get ready for Thanksgiving!
